Little is known about Ada Howell Hinton. She was born in approximately 1840 to Frederick Augustus Hinton, a very successful barber and perfumer originally from Raleigh, North Carolina. Frederick Hinton was a member of St. Thomas’ African Episcopal Church and was an agent for William Lloyd Garrison’s newspaper The Liberator. In 1837, after her mother Eliza Ann Howell died, Frederick married Emily Willson’s sister Elizabeth, who then became Ada’s step mother. The 1880 US Federal Census lists Hinton as a teacher.
